Coordinator of the Residential Life Program

Soraida Portales

Soraida Portales was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley. She attended University of the Incarnate Word and earned a dual degree in Psychology and Religious Studies. In Fall 2006 she joined the UIW Residence Life team as a Resident Assistant. While working towards completion of her undergraduate degree she interned with CASA; as a court appointed advocate for foster children she realized her passion was helping others and decided to pursue a career in student affairs. Soraida is currently the Assistant Coordinator of the IWHS-St. Anthony Residential Life Program since August 2008 and enjoys working with a culturally diverse and talented resident population and RA team. She is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of a dynamic Residence Life team that develops high school students to achieve their highest potential by offering them leadership support, motivation and personal development. During her spare time she loves to paint, write poetry and spend time with family and friends. Soraida wants to pursue and achieve her professional goal of earning a PhD in Counseling.

Resident Assistants

Our residential life program is composed of 9 para-professional staff members called Resident Assistants. The RA is a mentor, who develops, coordinates and maintains a program within the community, which strives to provide a positive intellectual, emotional and social living environment for the residents. An RA is someone with at least two semesters of on campus living (including current semester) at the University of the Incarnate Word. The RA is selected on the basis of displaying sensitivity to an interest in working with a diverse group of people, neutrality, respect for dignity and worth of the individual, open-mindedness on issues, and degree of empathy, ability to make decisions and be a positive role model to the young female residents.
